At about 4:30 Friday afternoon, I became aware of some rustling in the bushes outside my office window.  Normally this is just the grey squirrels, but our resident armadillo occasionally pokes around, so I got up to look.  It was neither.

Ditto. I generally distrust diurnal raccoons, as such changes in behavior can signal rabies. It's still possible. But my bet is that this is the raccoon equivalent of human babies that keep their mothers awake in the middle of the night—or wake up very early in the morning, since this was early evening.
