If you give up pie for lent, can you still eat Boston cream pie?  The only thing that luscious concoction of cake, pudding, and chocolate icing has in common with pie is that both are round.

Then there’s the kind that is a different shape altogether—at least when I was in school we were taught that it was square.  Personally, I think this video proves that it isn’t square at all, but a very cool dude indeed.

Happy Pi Day, everyone!*

*Technically, it's still the 13th as I post this.  But it's 3.14 in Switzerland, which is good enough for me.  I've decided not to stay up till 1:59 a.m., anyway.

My apologies to those of you who are late coming to this post, as if you try to play the video now you will get this message: "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Lars Erickson." The situation appears to be more complicated than a case of someone posting a pirated video on YouTube. The CBS article (which also no longer plays the piece) attributes the music to Michael John Blake.

Whatever. If you missed it, it's a pity. It was cool. Maybe they'll sort it all out eventually and bring it back.

Hmmm. I just heard some of Lars Erickson's version and am glad I'm not a copyright lawyer to have to figure these things out. The two works don't seem the same to me at all, and as for copyrighting the idea of basing a piece of music on the digits of pi, well, as one commenter said (language cleaned up a bit), "Forget pi. I'm just going to copyright the C major scale and call it a day...."

Here's a site where you can (at least for the moment) hear both versions and see for yourself.
