There are many ways to serve one's country besides military service, but today we honor those who have given the extraordinary service of laying their lives, health, and future on the line for us, especially those who gave "the last full measure of devotion."
In particular we remember today:
Harry Gilbert Faulk, son of Olaf Frederick and Hilma Reuterberg Faulk, wounded in action near Chatêau-Thierry, France, July 25, 1918. Died of his wounds later that day.
Hezekiah Scovil Porter, son of Wallace and Florence Wells Porter, killed in action near Chatêau-Thierry, France, July 22, 1918.

were from Old Saybrook and Higganum, Connecticut, and served in the 101st Machine Gun
Battalion of the 26th Division during World War I.
And for all of our current servicemen and women, I offer the following prayer from the Book of Common Prayer (U.S. Episcopal Church, 1979 version)
Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
