In honor of my father, who knew to display an iris on this occasion.

Why disply an Iris? And how did he? Our irises are all finished by now.

Patriotic as he was, he was also fond of wordplay, as you know. So in addition to flying the American flag on Flag Day, he would sometimes display/send/otherwise mention something related to irises, which are a "flag flower." (From Answers.com: A plant, such as an iris or cattail, that has long sword-shaped leaves.)
