Patriotic as he was, he was also fond of wordplay, as you know. So in addition to flying the American flag on Flag Day, he would sometimes display/send/otherwise mention something related to irises, which are a "flag flower." (From Answers.com: A plant, such as an iris or cattail, that has long sword-shaped leaves.)
