A recent New York Times article on the effort to promote breastfeeding includes this interesting line:

Nursing may even produce a euphoric feeling

So if you can't convince them with the overwhelming evidence of breastfeeding's benefits for the baby, try suggesting it as a new way to get high!

This is hilarious and true!!! I'm teaching (and learning from) my 12 day old son to breastfeed (we're getting the hang of it, now!). He's my third breastfed son, so you'd think I'd have the hang of it by now?!?! Any way, we're having problems with pain (me...not him) and the pain is almost immediately overcome by this euphoric "what a good boy, adam! you're amazing! look at you go! i love you so much!" feeling and i can't stop looking at him and wondering why people choose not to breastfeed. then i remember the pain. :) but seriously, i totally understand the euphoria. ~liz

Since this is your third time, YOU have the hang of it -- but of course it's Adam's first time. :) Sadly, many people don't know that the pain is usually brief and the euphoria long, and they give up. Some doctors have a lot to answer for. Thanks for writing!
