A break in the weather (in which the winds on the mountain are predicted to be "only" 60 mph) is expected to set off an intensive search and rescue operation for the three climbers stranded on Mt. Hood. Please pray for the success of the effort, and for the safety of the searchers. The mountain is still very dangerous, with high risk of avalanche because of the recent storms.

Some of you who read this blog know Frank James, brother of one of the climbers. All those years of teaching seminary students have made him a highly articulate spokesman for the family, as you will see if you follow the news conference links below. I know I should be just as concerned if those involved were total strangers, but the personal connection always makes it easier to realize that these faceless strangers are human beings, somebody's husband, father, brother, and son. (Listen to Frank's description of their mother in the first video; it will make you smile despite the gravity of the situation.)

We were gone all evening at a Lessons and Carols service, though the climbers were rarely out of my thoughts. The serenity of the evening was shattered when we returned to the news that one of the climbers has been found, dead (identity not yet known). I don't have the heart to post separate links, but I found an index page for the KATU videos that's better, anyway.

The climber found yesterday has not been officially identified, but evidence (a ring with his initials) has convinced the family that he is Kelly James. Our hearts are broken for everyone involved. The search continues for Brian Hall and Jerry Cooke.

An excerpt from Frank James' statement at the families' news conference this morning:

This is a difficult day for all three families. Our hope was that Kelly, Brian and Jerry would all be rescued safely and that has led these families to become very, very close. We’re persuaded that Kelly has been found. But I feel like I have two other brothers still on the mountain, and the James family is deeply, deeply grateful to the rescue efforts to date. We wish the rescue workers Godspeed in their ongoing efforts to bring Brian and Jerry down that mountain safely....

We find strength in your support and we join all of you in your prayers for the safe return of Brian and Jerry.... As Christians, we find peace that Kelly is with God.... Kelly always told us he felt closest to God when he was on the mountain. That is what drove him to climb. We find enoormous comfort in knowing he lifted off that mountain from a place he loved, and from doing something that he loved very, very much....

Thank you for all of your support. The family is very grateful.

A day late and a dollar short, but I found a much better website than this for keeping up with news of the climbers. I'm posting the link anyway because some of you will want to read Carolyn's comments: Prayers for the Three Mt. Hood Climbers blog.
