Others, I'm sure will list more exiting benefits of gaining a husband, and I'm certainly not despising companionship, children, and being able to file a joint tax return.  But it's also really, really nice to have someone around who will

  • Do any work that involves heights greater than can be reached with a step stool,
  • Open the pickle jar, and
  • Remove the dead rat from the backyard.

Joint tax returns are a royal pain in the butooskey.

Is it that way because you're overseas? Or because your wife is self-employed, which is a RPITB tax-wise? My Favorite Tax Preparer says it's easier to file one return than two. And as Tax Proofreader, I'd agree that the complications come from other sources, like having to file taxes in several different states, each with different rules.... Joint returns at least have the benefit of saving us a good deal of money, whereas paying tax to several states get us...um...the right to travel on their roads?

Both being overseas and being self-employed mean a great many more papers to file. And ask you know, each one depends on filling out the others first . . .

What in the heck is a Tax Proofreader?! I've written the help files for tax software (what pops up when you push the help button) but I've never come across this one!

Sorry, Katie -- the Favorite Tax Preparer is my husband, and I am the Tax Proofreader. :)

Okay!
That's why _I_ do the tax preparation in this household. The last time The Larger Half prepared the tax return, he forgot the personal tax exemption and was horrified to tell me that we owed $15K (in addition to taxes already paid!)
So now I'm the Tax Preparer and he's the Proofreader.
