I can and do text, finding it quite useful at times, mostly because not all phones send and receive e-mails, and because our overseas friends can receive texts for free...
...but I just don't get why anyone who knows how to type would prefer texting. And although in extremity I will do it, I have a deep aversion to abbreviating words, omitting capitalization, and leaving out punctuation.

You do realize that it is perfectly OK to text with proper spelling and capitalization, don't you?
Ah, yes—but it's a significant contribution to my slowness, which is one reason I'd rather e-mail.
I know kids can be really quick with their thumbs when texting, but it's also shocking to me how many high school students these days don't know how to type, which is another reason they think texting is fast enough.
